PSHE
Our vision is that children will acquire the knowledge, attitude and skills needed to:
- understand and manage emotions
- set and achieve positive goals
- feel and show emplathy for others
- establish and maintain positive relationships
- make safe and responsible decisions
Our strong PSHE curriculum is important to help our pupils develop into well-rounded members of society, who are able to make a positive contribution to their community. At Malton Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is strongly linked to our relationships and health education (RSE), pastoral care programme and the promotion of British Values.
Intent
Our intention is that when children leave Malton Primary Academy they will do so with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to have an active and positive role in today’s diverse, ever-changing society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible when they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of factors which affect their world. We want them to be emotionally equipped to cope with these so that they have good mental health and well-being.
Our PSHE curriculum spirals in depth and allows children to revisit previous learning thus resulting in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable them to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education curriculum enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.
Implementation
At Malton Primary Academy Jigsaw PSHE provides the spine of our curriculum. This offers a comprehensive, progressive scheme of work, which will prepare children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
Teachers adapt carefully planned sequences of lessons to ensure we give children the opportunity for relevant learning experiences which help them navigate their world and the way they conduct relationships. Every half term, all year groups, from EYFS through to Year 6, focus on the same theme at the same time. Each half term has a different focus.
Autumn 1: Being in my World
Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference
Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
Spring 2: Healthy me
Summer 1: Relationships
Summer 2: Changing me.
Weekly assemblies and class circles relate closely to these themes and the weekly lessons to allow teachers to explore the themes a little more closely and in more depth. These assemblies and circles also allow us to support children to cope with issues that may arise on an ad hoc basis such as social media for example.
