Welcome to a new year in Class Elphinstone!

I am so excited to be teaching Year 6 again and I am looking forward to exploring different enquiries in more depth.

We have had an exciting start to the year with the children receiving their new roles for the year and I am positive that this cohort of year 6s will have a positive impact on the school.

This half term the children are enquiring around the book “wonder” and exploring how we are all different. From this we have already investigated evolution and adaptation and explored the role of DNA in our own identities.

We have already embedded a routine in year 6 and everything is geared around our class focus of spellings. In Elphinstone we are using MAPS (meaning, accuracy, punctuation and spellings) to edit our writing with king helpers there to support. It is important this year that the children develop their own skills and independence with proof reading. Homework, which will include spellings, will be sent home every Friday and will need to be handed in every Friday. As the children are preparing for secondary school it is important for you as parents to support them with their homework and getting into a home learning routine. However If anyone is struggling they can attend a homework club every Wednesday lunch time.

Over the past two weeks we have been exploring fraction and getting to grips with key concepts like simplifying and common lowest denominator, why don’t you ask your child to explain these concepts to you?

Once again I just want to illiterate how excited I am for this year and how proud I am already of how the class have taken on SAT challenges.
