Where is my place in the world?



The children in Class Beck have been working very hard to complete their previous enquiry into the key questions: What makes a principled leader? How and why are people treated differently? We are now at the final stage of this enquiry where we will be working in collaborative enquiry groups to present our information as a final outcome. The children all decided that they wanted to create an information resource for other children in school, in other schools and around the world about the key individuals we have enquired into. They will be using everything that they have learned so far to create these final outcomes which will take the form of videos, booklets, posters, songs and leaflets. We will then evaluate our learning and consider which learner characteristics have been developed during this enquiry.


We are also at the initial wondering stage of our new enquiry, linked to the overarching theme of 'Where is my place in the world?'. This enquiry will allow the children to compare the life of a child in our community, with the life of a child in Stone Age to Iron Age Britain as well as considering how these lives differ from how children live around the world today in a range of countries. As a class, we will consider communities and how to share resources within them as well as issues such as child slavery, poverty, education and the difference we can make as individuals. 


In Maths, we have finished our recent topic based around fractions and the children were all able to progress from being fluent, to reasoning about fractions before finally applying this knowledge to problem solving challenges. The new topic in Maths will be time and you can support your child at home by helping them to tell the time using both analogue and digital clocks. In Literacy, we have just completed phase 3 of our Traditional Tale writing and the children have all created their own alternative versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will now be linking our next writing unit to our enquiry and focusing on non-fiction text types before revisiting stories to create historical stories based on our enquiry into the Stone Age and Iron Age Britain. 


Our recent trip to the countryside was a very successful visit to Uncleby Farm. Thank you to Mrs Holtby and Mrs Geggie who came along to support the children in their learning. During our visit we used our fieldwork skills to create a first draft map of the farm environment and we took measurements to support us in creating an accurate map of the area. We also considered a range of different animal habitats which will support us in our Science learning in the classroom. 


P.E has now returned to Friday afternoons so please ensure that kits are in school for that session.
