Spring Is Here!

Over the last couple of weeks the children have shown a real interest in changes in the environment. They have discussed changes in the weather and have noticed new growth in our outdoor area.

The children have been on a Spring walk and can now name flowers associated with Spring, such as Daffodils, Tulips, Daisies, Snowdrops and the blossom on the trees.

How can we learn to build with our friends?

Class Kipper have made an excellent start to this half term. We are sorry to say goodbye to Miss Grayson, our student teacher, as she now moves on to her next school placement. The children have really enjoyed the activities she has planned for them over the past few weeks, from planting cress seeds to being greedy goats and fearsome trolls from The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children now know how to 'trip trap' over a bridge and what hungry trolls really love to eat!

We are now going to start our new enquiry 'how can we learn to build together?' We will base this on the story The Three Little Pigs. We will be exploring how to build houses, sharing our own experiences of home life and learning how to work together on projects. We will be encouraging the children to collaborate, plan and share ideas and to take turns and compromise. We will be building with a range of construction materials, both indoors and outdoors.

How does the cold feel?

Welcome back to school Class Kipper. We are pleased to be joined by our new starters this term.  We are also pleased to have Miss Grayson join us this half term. Miss Grayson will be completing her teacher training placement with us until March.

We have many exciting opportunities planned for the children this half term. Every Tuesday children will be able to join in with the cooking and tasting sessions we have planned. On a Thursday children will be having dance session in the hall to further develop their physical skills and imagination.

Our enquiry over the next couple of weeks is based around the key question “How does the cold feel?”  Hopefully the children will get the experience some cold, frosty days and possibly snow!  We will look at stories, poems and information books linked to the cold and winter. Children are becoming much better at listening to stories as part of a group, they are now starting to answer questions based on what they have read. This term we will continue to develop this but also support children in playing with rhymes, rhythm and alliteration. We have a number of children now who are able to recognise their own name, please encourage your child to find their own name at the beginning of the session. We shall also be practicing writing names with the children too.

Why do we have different colours?

The children have been really busy this half term in Class Kipper. We have been exploring the question “Why do we have different colours?” Over the term children have been very excited by the seasonal festivities such as Halloween and Bonfire Night. These led nicely into looking at the different colours and patterns that the children had seen. The children then had the opportunity to represent their ideas using loose parts, paints, chalks and crayons.

In our language and literacy sessions we have read Elmer stories. We changed our role play area into a jungle and the children have had great fun exploring the different jungle animals. The children are becoming quite confident in talking about story settings and characters. They are now able to recall key events in stories. In our phonic sessions we have introducing set 1 initial sounds and tuning into sound patterns.

How can we be a good friend?

Class Kipper are continuing to learn about what it means to be a good friend. We have been working together on projects, sharing resources and thinking carefully about how we behave towards our classmates and our teachers in school. The children are really working hard to take turns and to help each other.

We have been thinking about our feelings and concentrating on what makes us feel happy, sad or cross. The children have been sharing ideas how to make their friends feel better if they are sad. We have also been learning lots of songs to support our work. Class Kipper just love to sing!
